“NEVERLOVE” (Yaroslav Stepanov): biography of a musical artist

At the peak of his popularity in 2021, this musician sadly wrote on TikTok: “It’s a pity when really good songs don’t get into the asset and are not appreciated by listeners, and all sorts of laughs fly into the top!” It was said about the single “Lines to You”. And what to do if not lyrical, serious songs “fly” on Tik-Tok, but something else – loud, noisy, impudent, “destroying ambitions”? With these words, a fan of “NEVERLOVE” called one of the songs of the group. In the VK profile, the soloist of the group identified himself as Yaroslav Andreevich, in the official information of authorship and performance, he is indicated as Yaroslav Stepanov. His and his friends' path to fame is another story about how music swept aside everything that interfered with creativity and turned an office worker and linguist into a love metal star – a word from the album's title and in fact the definition of the style in which the band performs.

When and how it all started

Unfortunately, the exact date of Yaroslav's birth is not indicated anywhere, but he is no less than 25 years old: by 2020, when the NEVERLOVE group has seriously declared itself, he managed to graduate from the university and work in a field that does not have nothing to do with music. Stepanov studied at a university with a language direction: “I am a linguist-translator by education, even during my studies I often taught English,” from his interview for modernrock. At the faculties where they study foreign languages, two languages are taught, at the NEVERLOVE frontman it is English and German.

He does not share details about his childhood, but he is happy to answer questions about the period when he started working after high school. A call center, a brokerage company, trading “everything in a row, from groceries to vacuum cleaners” (in his words) are a few jobs that Yaroslav Stepanov mentioned in an interview. But the young man always emphasized why he worked: “I earned money and invested in projects, and I believed that it would work out.” By the way, he thanked his past bosses many times for not being fired even once for maybe not working too hard: “One of the managers was a musician himself and was sympathetic to my rehearsals and time-consuming filming.”

“Sexmetal” or “Lovemetal”?

In the first case, the group members are urged to emphasize the second syllable. There is one more word that has long been used to designate a group in the Russian musical community: “Reklavrock” is the name of one of their first albums, the release took place in September 2020, and even earlier, in April, the collection “Dreams of Love and Death” was released “. But Yaroslav Stepanov started doing creative work much earlier – in 2015 and 2016. Interestingly, then he was not going to compose and perform something in Russian: “They considered it a zashkvar and a collective farm,” from his story about that period.

In 2019, together with his friends, he began to actively prepare the NEVERLOVE project: by that time, Yaroslav had already implemented many different undertakings, of which the Frontiers project is especially dear to him, in his own words (he developed it for three years). Another quote, according to Stepanov: “In 2020, we thought that we would make a release, and it would be perceived cool. And suddenly bam – all the news is full of messages about covid. It seemed that a fresh idea would die in the bud in the light of unpleasant events! And then Tik-Tok came to the aid of the group. It was there that the new name exploded like a bomb, where subscribers began to feverishly repost their songs. Quarantine, the pandemic helped them: people, sitting at home, spent more time online and appreciated their new work.

The Tik-Tok account of the soloist of the band presented the song, which turned into a full-fledged meme. “Milfhunters, you're on trend!” – they wrote in the electronic media after Yaroslav's refrain to the single with this name appeared on Tik-Tok. An already popular group, it would seem, did not need “shocks” for the path to even greater popularity. But it turned out that the limit has not yet been reached: both NEVERLOVE themselves and the fans realized this when the Lovemetal You Deserved disc was released. Another quote from a critical article after the release of the collection: “Unrealistically rapid rise and hit the top lists on all music platforms.”

“Our gang has shown what we are capable of in a year and a half of hard work,” Yaroslav Stepanov wrote in September 2021, adding: “The heat is still ahead!” Indeed, the heat only flared up: the fans of the group enthusiastically accepted the single “Lisiy-Kisii”, the album “Rock and Roll Forgive Me Everything” gained listening on the network with fantastic speed, Yaroslav successfully continued to develop his personal project “unluvd”. He did not stop displaying all his activities and groups on Tik-Tok: every day in the account “Yaroslav from NEVERLOVE” there is a dialogue with subscribers, the singer constantly posts answers to fans, records videos to order.

Latest news

The news is such that NEVERLOVE fans are looking forward to the release of the new album. “For now, listen to the single from the upcoming “toxic” compilation,” is a post with the song “Go away” for February 18 (the release of the next disc is scheduled for March). Meanwhile, the group itself is making a big tour of Ukraine, they perform with great success! At the end of February, someone is rattling weapons and uncovering guns on the border of two countries, and the NEVERLOVE soloist has a post on Instagram: “We played a concert in Kharkov so that the devils under the club must have been frightened: the war, or what, has begun?” Let such a war be better – where there are no victims and winners, but only satisfied concert visitors and a new leap towards great popularity among musicians.
